ENGLISH TEACHER WALLACE

Leeds band English Teacher are emerging as an exciting breath of fresh air to the pool of British post-punk. Their debut single 'R&B' went down a treat, and now the band drop 'Wallace'. The new single begins with distorted single-note guitar and vocal narration. Soon the track becomes full bodied, with fuzzy guitar strums, a ghoulish bass line and witchy synth melody. Raw, but never angry, Singer Lily Fontaine addresses climate change and religion in the same breath. Low-pitched, mournful cello notes remind us of the chaos we've already caused to the planet, and the doom to come should we and our governments continue to bask in ignorance. Detailing their newest single, the band explained: “‘Wallace’ is an apocalyptic monologue about what happens when people listen to Wallace Hartley, the band-leader of the Titanic, as a distraction to the sinking of the ship. Born in my hometown, his name is stretched across the door of our local Wetherspoons – thinking about the irony of this got me wrapped up in how the metaphor perfectly expressed my feelings towards the political leanings of the area and the general rise of the right-wing in modern England.”. 'Wallace' is out now on Nice Swan, listen here. -Ellie Rose-Davies
